The Orofino Junior High School Viking team mascot was chosen by a vote of the student body in 1969 while Palmer Chase was principal. The distinctive blue and gold mascot and colors stand out in a town of Maniac mascots.

When the student body voted the mascot in Chase said they had several other choices including bears and pink panthers. Most favored the Vikings. Those who have had a chance to be in the OJHS art room have seen the mural with the Viking ship and other characters that was painted by students in the art class when Johanna Altmiller was instructor.
