Risch addresses drug abuse, nursing shortage, property taxes

BOISE-Governor Jim Risch was sworn in on the Statehouse steps with a giant American flag hanging from the Capitol as a backdrop Friday, June 2.

In his inaugural address, he said that he must address matters handed to him, such as roadless area rules, GARVEE highway funding, rehabilitating state parks and Medicaid rules. He said work on the state budget was also a priority, according to a press release from his office.

"All of these matters demand and will receive my direct, hands on involvement, and they will get it," said Risch.

Risch also said he has several other issues he wants to address such as the problem with methamphetamine use, nursing shortages and possibly a special session to address property tax relief. He indicated that the list was not comprehensive by any means.

Referring to the property tax issue, Risch said that, "when circumstances change as they have with property tax values, tax policy should be re-evaluated."

Following his address the Risch hosted former governors Phil Batt, John Evans and Cecil Andrus at a reception in the Governor's suite attended by current and former elected officials and legislators.
