By Ruth Cochran Montague "The community on Doumecq Plains lived briefly and was gone. Only the old buildings remain..." starts the reminiscences of Ruth Cochran Montague about growing up on the plains between the Salmon and Snake rivers of central Idaho. Though the physical evidence may have dwindled, Montague brings the people, time and community back to life in her book, Seven Switchbacks to Home. From her description of constructing furniture out of kerosene boxes to using flour and sugar sacks for under clothing, complete with crocheted lace edges, she paints images of a time gone by yet still alive in her memory and words. This brief book will take you there too. Seven Switchbacks to Home is available at Clearwater Historical Museum . Tuesday - Saturday from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. (Oct. through May) |
