Orofino JV Football team defeats Moscow Bears

The Orofino High School Junior Varsity Football Team pulled out a victory over the Moscow Bears Thursday night on their home field.

Both the defensive line and offensive line for the Orofino Maniacs were up to the task at hand last night. DJ Wright (quarterback for the Maniacs) did a quarterback sneak into the end zone with less than three minutes of the game gone. A two point conversion was complete. Moscow came in for three up and three down. Orofino got the ball back and on a 10 yard pass from Wright to Carey Chambers ran in for the score. The two point conversion was not made.

Moscow found life with 4:21 left in the first quarter when Joey Renner handed the ball to Michael Washington for a wide left run. Washington took it into the end zone for the Bears. Washington then kicked his own field goal to make it 14-7 Orofino. On the following kickoff, Chambers made an excellent runback to the 35 yard line, but Orofino was not able to capitalize on it.

In the second quarter Orofino muffed the kick off and Moscow recovered and capitalized by scoring another six points, but could not make the conversion. Wright then made a big pass downfield to Doug Williams for a 13 yard gain. An additional 10 yards was added due to a late hit after Williams had gone out of bounds. That put the ball on the 15 yard line. Wright then handed the ball to Chambers to seal the six points and a two point conversion counted to end the half with the score of 22-13.

Third quarter scoring took place on a botched punt from Moscow. Orofino got the ball on the 35 yard line. Chambers got the toss and took the ball in for the score. A two point conversion counted to make the score 30-13. One play that took the Maniacs time to catch onto from the Moscow team was the wide sweep of the quarterback. Caleb Davis from Moscow did just that and scored for the Bears with 5:10 left in the third. They did a two point conversion which counted so the score was 30-21.

Moscow capitalized on a blocked punt from Orofino when Davis passed to Washington for the touchdown which ended the quarter 30-27 in Orofino's favor.

Both teams were going back and fourth in the fourth quarter. In one stand Orofino got to the two yard line only to fumble the ball over to the Moscow Bears. However, the Maniac defense held them there at the two yard line and Moscow had to punt. The kick was blocked and Orofino got the ball on the 1 yard line. Wright did a quarterback sneak for the six points. The conversion did not count, but it was enough for the Orofino Maniacs to go on to win the game by the score of 36-27.

The next Orofino JV football game will be in Grangeville Sept. 15 at 6 p.m.
