Actions groups begin work on projects

Action groups formed following a community workshop by David Buerle met last week to begin working on three specific projects.

Participants in the workshop developed a community vision for Orofino which reads: "Orofino practices catch-and-release tourism in a small-town, youth centered, family-friendly community. All are welcomed and included as we celebrate our historical roots, our pride in our youth, and our rich culture.

"We are the steelhead capital of the world and have a diverse and thriving economy. We maximize the value of our unique regional foods, rich timberlands, and strong artistic and creative traditions."

One of the action groups is working to create an inaugural "Steelhead Capital of the World" celebration. In their meeting Feb. 1, the group brainstormed action items to develop the celebration. They are scheduled to meet Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Orofino High School.

Stimulating more youth participation and a transition of power to new leaders is the goal of the second group. Their focus is to involve youth from grade school through their 20s in community activities and leadership. They will also work on improved communication. Their next meeting is set for Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at OHS.

A third action group is working on creating a mechanism and structure to build on-going collaboration between groups and organizations in the community. One of their first priorities is to compile a list of groups and organizations and contact people. The primary goal is help the individual groups to understand the community vision and how they can contribute to its fulfillment. They will meet Thursday at 6 p.m. at OHS.

"Building a Brighter Future for Orofino", a LeadershipPlenty© Program will begin Tuesday at the Ponderosa Restaurant. There will be two sessions. The first is from 3:30-5 p.m. and the second from 5:30-6:45. There will be a dinner between sessions. The program is free.

Community members are invited to become involved with the actions groups and the leadership training. For further information, contact Ken Cohen, Horizon coach, kcohen@uidaho.edu, 208-885-7444.
