Fire restrictions lifted in North Central Idaho

Due to wetting rains easing the dry conditions and fire danger throughout central Idaho, local wildland fire protection agencies have lifted Stage 1 Fire Restrictions, effective tonight, Oct. 15, at midnight.

Stage 1 restrictions apply to campfire use and smoking. Rick Brazell, Forest Supervisor for the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests said, "We encourage public land users to continue to be careful with any activity that could cause a fire."

The area includes private and agency lands protected by the Clearwater National Forest; Idaho Department of Lands (IDL) Forest Protection Districts; Clearwater-Potlatch Timber Protection Association; Bureau of Land Management (BLM); and the Nez Perce Tribe within the areas listed below:

  • All Private, State, Tribal, USFS, and BLM protected lands outside incorporated city limits within Nez Perce, Clearwater and Lewis Counties; those portions of Idaho County that are north of the Salmon River (east of Riggins), west of Highway 95 (south of Riggins) and are not federal lands designated as Wilderness; that portion of Adams County that lies within the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area;
  • All Clearwater National Forest lands within Latah County.

Clearwater-Potlatch Timber Protective Association is again issuing burn permits until the end of the season Saturday. After Oct. 20, no permits are needed for the lands they protect. Fire danger in the region is now in the low range.

This afternoon, Idaho Department of Fish and Game has also lifted all fire restrictions on the lands they manage in Clearwater, Lewis, Idaho, Nez Perce and Latah counties. That includes Craig Mountain and Red River wildlife management areas, over 70 fishing sites and any other lands owned, managed or controlled by the agency in the five counties.

Check with local Forest Service offices to obtain current information about road and trail closures related to fire activity. A summary of current closures for the Clear/Nez Fire Zone can be found under Public Notices at: http://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/nezperce/alerts-notices.
