Enrollment down in school district Enrollment in Joint School District #171 is down 58 from September 2005, according to statistics gathered earlier this month. A total of 1,372 students were enrolled in September 2005. This year the number is 1,314. While numbers are down all over the district, of particular note is the comparison of the numbers of kindergarten students to the number of students in higher grades. This decline in the number of kindergarten children has been the trend over the last several years, according to Superintendent Dale Durkee. This year there are 102 high school seniors and only 70 students enrolled in kindergarten. The class with the highest number of students is in 10th grade (sophomores) with 147. Orofino Elementary School has the highest number of students in all the buildings with 452. Orofino High School has 367, Timberline Junior/Senior High School 173, Orofino Junior High School 172, Weippe Elementary School 69, Pierce School 48, Pierce School 48, Cavendish/Teakean 18 and Peck 15. Pre-school numbers were not yet available. In other quick facts about the district: The 2006-06 Operating Budget is $9.2 million with additional state and federal grants of $3.6 million. More than 28 percent of certified staff have at least a Master's degree. District buses travel more than 1,000 miles per day delivering students to and from schools on 18 bus routes. Food service personnel serve over 15,000 meals per month. All meals meet requirements of the National School Lunch program. Custodians clean over 330,000 square feet of buildings every day. School board meetings are the third Monday of every month, except when there is a conflicting holiday. The public is invited to attend. District #171 reading scores have improved every year for the past three years. |
