Community Clean Up Day scheduled April 29

April 29 has been designated as Community Clean Up and beautification Day.

ManiYac Pride, Orofino Chamber of Commerce, Orofino Progressive Merchants, Urban Forestry of Orofino, Kiwanis and Rotary clubs in cooperation with the City of Orofino, Clearwater County, Green Things Nursery and Simmons- NADL Enterprises Inc. are spearheading a community spring clean up effort again this year.

The Community is rolling up its sleeves for this spring fling event. Individuals and organizations are asked to clean up around their homes and work places. In addition, groups and individuals are encouraged to sign up and clean up an area in need in their neighborhood or elsewhere in the community.

The organizing committee is also promoting building community pride and beautification. Individuals, groups and organizations are encouraged to get involved in community beautification projects.

In addition to clean up efforts, the committee is encouraging the planting of rhododendrons in the community and is working with the Green Thing Nursery to have a special promotional of hardy rhododendrons.

In celebration of Arbor Day, the Urban Forestry of Orofino (UFO) will be distributing free seedlings and raffling ornamental shrubs and trees. Information on planting and tree care will be available.

Clearwater Emergency Management will provide information on ways to help protect property in the event of natural disasters such as wildfire, landslides and flooding.

New this year, the Clearwater National Forest will help celebrate Earth Day with a display of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and information on Leave no Trace. Smokey Bear will also be there.

The committee would like to see abandoned vehicles within the city limits cleaned up. People are encouraged to call and let the committee know about any abandoned vehicles in their neighborhoods.

Recycling is also being promoted. The transfer station is the local recycling center. Recycling is good for the environment, good for the economy and good for the community. It is a win-win situation for all, do it.

KLER is promoting an aluminum can contest. The person or group that donates the most pounds of aluminum cans to either the teen center or to help support local families stay at the Ronald McDonald house in Spokane, will receive a six pack of music CDs, six t-shirts and $ 25 from KLER.

The clean-up program will include:

At the City Park--

  • Free trash bag available from 7 a.m. to noon.
  • Trash trucks will be available for trash deposits all weekend.
  • Free hot dog lunch from noon to 1 p.m. for those signed up.
  • Free seedlings will be given from 9 a.m. to noon (while they last)
  • Ornamental plant raffle at noon
  • Clearwater Emergency Management information from 9 a.m. to noon
  • Clearwater National Forest display and information along with Smokey Bear from 9 a.m. to noon
  • KLER aluminum can contest award at noon
  • Tree City USA and Growth awards will be presented to the City at noon

At the Transfer Station--

  • Open from 8 a.m. to 4 pm all weekend
  • Will take small truck and passenger tires
  • Deposit of household pesticides
  • KLER aluminum can contest collection April 29 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
  • Recyclables: cardboard, newspaper, aluminum cans, scrap iron, batteries (car & rechargeable), electronics, used crankcase oil.

Even though April 29 has been designated as official Community Cleanup Day, clean up activities can be done anytime at the convenience of individuals, groups or organizations.

People are encouraged to take pride in their homes, work place, neighborhood and community. Join in, clean up, beautify, learn about protecting property against natural disasters and celebrate Arbor Day by planting a tree and recycle.
