Back Country Medics respond to help man with broken leg

Orofino's Back Country Medics responded to the Bull Creek Ridge area on the north side of the Salmon River about 1 1/2 -2 miles downstream from the Shepp Ranch early Friday afternoon to assist a man who had fallen and broken his right leg, according to Tim Norton.

The 47-year-old California man was hunting with friends when the accident occurred. The man was about 400 yards up a very steep slope and his friends assisted the Back Country Medics, Norton and Mike Tinsley, in carrying him to the waiting helicopter. The man was flown by helicopter to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston. To transport the man by land would have taken about two days, Norton said.

The hunting party was able to call out on a satellite phone and give the GPS (Global Positioning System) coordinates to guide the rescuers to their location, Norton.

He suggests people carry flares, fuzees or something large and bright orange such as the bright garbage bags like those used for litter pickup when they are going to be out in the backcountry. These items can be used to help rescuers locate a specific area. A small, smoky fire can also be used with caution, Norton said.

Gale Wilson, owner of Hillcrest Aircraft Company, was the pilot of the Bell Long Ranger used for the mission. The Long Ranger allows space for the pilot, patient and two emergency medical technicians (EMTs).

John Allen is a hard worker and he certainly cares deeply about Clearwater County. I'm sure he'll do a great job as county commissioner.
Marguerite McLaughlin, former Idaho State Senator, District 8

As a Planning and Zoning Commissioner, John quickly grasps the information and comes up with solutions to the thorny problems we often encounter.
Mike Reggear, Clearwater County Planning and Zoning Commissioner

In all the work John has done for C-PTPA over the years he's always been extremely conscientious, hard working and reliable. He shows a great respect for his co-workers and those in the community. He'd make a great county commissioner.
Jim Mallory, President, Clearwater-Potlatch Timber Protective Association

If we don't have orderly development now all of us will pay the price further down the road. John understands the issues. He's a listener and he's not afraid to protect our quality of life for now and for the future.
Don Ebert, Clearwater County Commissioner, District 1

It's important for the city and county to work together well. I believe John Allen has the best interests of both in mind. He'd be very good to work with.
