Girl dies in 4-wheeler accident

An 11-year-old Orofino girl was killed in a 4-wheeler accident Sunday afternoon, according to Clearwater County Sheriff's Department (CCSO).

The girl's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, according to CCSO.

Deputies and other rescue personnel were dispatched to the scene of the accident in the Freeman Creek area about 3 p.m. The girl had been driving a 4-wheeler with her mother and one-year-old sister on it. She hit the gas instead of the brake to down shift and the machine flipped backward. The mother and sister were not injured, CCSO said.

Back Country Medics flew the girl by helicopter to Clearwater Valley Hospital. She was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to CCSO.

In addition to CCSO and Back Country Medics, Clearwater County Ambulance Service, Orofino Fire Department and Evergreen Fire Department assisted.

Joint School District #171's Crisis Team was activated and members were available today at both Orofino Elementary School and Orofino Junior High School to provide assistance for students or staff. Resources will also be available Tuesday at OES. For further information, contact Sallie Wilhelm at 476-4613.
