Is the type of glass used on my art important?

The answer is a resounding YES! The Glass or, as it is referred to in the industry, Glazing is at least as important as the color or type of mat you choose for your art.

Many people don't realize that the art they have currently hanging on their walls are slowing decaying and being faded by the sun or even other UV sources such as Fluorescent light bulbs. The reason you may not know is that it is happening slowly over weeks, months and years. It's only after you take the art out of the frame and remove the matting that you see the areas that were under the mat are many times more vibrant than what has been left exposed. Regular glass may only filter out as little as 45 percent of harmful UV rays, but there is another option. Ask for Conservation glass. At Frame of Mind we use Tru Vue conservation glass both in Clear and Reflection control. Both of these options have 99 percent protection against UV rays. In most cases to upgrade your regular clear glass to a conservation clear may be as little as $10 to $20. That relatively small amount will protect your art and mats from fading and last you a life time. In my opinion there is no better deal on the planet when it comes to protecting your art.

The next question you might ask is: Should I change the glass that I currently have on my art? The answer is again, Yes.

It is a good idea to have your fine art taken apart and cleaned. How often depends on many factors including the environment in which your art hangs or has been stored. Some environments are more conducive to the growth of mold and mildew. You might see a hazy growth on the inside of your glass that looks like a ghostly image of your art, chances are that is mold.

If you have any questions about your art or how it is framed, bring it in and let us help.
