Artists' works now on display
Two local artists recently started displaying their works at Frame of Mind, Joe Douglas and Dave Mathews. Check out their unique crafts.
Most fishermen get a sparkle in their eye when they talk about their sport, but Joe gets that look without going near water. Just ask him sometime about custom building fishing rods.
Joe Douglas custom builds a variety of fishing rods. Some of those rods are available at Frame of Mind.
He began to learn the craft about 13 years ago from a friend in Wisconsin. Since then he has done a lot of research, read a lot of books and taken classes in pursuit of more knowledge about different kinds of rods and how best to build them. There are right and wrong ways to go about it. He describes the craft as one of the more useful combinations of mechanical engineering, physics, chemistry and art.
Through his company, Black Dog Tackle, he builds custom rods to fit the person and the type of fishing they do whether is a fly, spey, spinning or casting rod. He also does rod repair and restoration, vintage rod sales and service.
Joe loves to share his knowledge of building rods with those who are serious about learning the mechanical engineering, physics, chemistry and art it takes to do it right.
Dave applies woodworking skills learned in his grandfather's shop in crafting clocks, flat top trunks and old fashioned furniture. A recent interest is driftwood art.

Mixing the variety of woods together and putting his personality into the piece are the two phases of the art that he enjoys most. Dave said wood allows the artist to do that.
He currently lives in Orofino, but comes from British Columbia, Canada, by way of California. He loves the great outdoors, snow and trees.
