Editor's Note: This is Part 2 of a series of articles on the All Hazard Mitigation Planning process that has been going on in Clearwater County. For background information on the process see this article...

The Flood Committee focused on five goals during the Strategic Planning Workshop held in February 2005.

The goals are:

  • Remove railroad trestles, culverts and other structures from the Jaype Mill to Konkolville.
  • Channel restoration along the lower four and one-half miles of Orofino Creek as outlined in the goals of the Orofino Creek Master Plan
  • Protection and mitigation for flooding (structural and nonstructural)
    • Gather stream flow and weather station data to develop an early warning system.
  • Flood mitigation/management of storm water runoff in the tributaries of Orofino Creek and other streams within Clearwater County
  • Restore upper watershed of Orofino Creek including road crossing maintenance and management of the head waters
    • Protect and restore fish habitat and water quality within the streams
    • Compile road/transportation inventory reports from the entities and showing resource problem areas
    • Identify resource problem areas within the inventory report
    • Culvert removal and/or replacement and landslide stabilization efforts.

At present, the Flood Committee is focusing on their first goal to determine a course of action to see that the trestles, culverts and other structures along the upper portion of Orofino Creek are removed. For further info see this article...
