English as a Second Language tutoring skills workshop set The Adult Learning Center will host a workshop, "English as a Second Language: Tutoring Skills", from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday, June 1. The training is for volunteers who are tutoring adults in English through the Adult Learning Center and for people interested in becoming volunteer tutors. English as a Second Language students are adults who want to improve their abilities to listen, speak, read, and write in English. They did not grow up speaking English. Volunteer tutors from the Adult Learning Center work one-on-one with ESL students, often meeting weekly to study. Jane Warthen will be the workshop trainer. She has been the coordinator of the Lewis Clark Valley Literacy Council in Clarkston, WA for the past six years. Her office provides free tutoring for adults in reading and English as a Second Language in the Clarkston/Lewiston area. Warthen said that 80 percent of the LCVLC clients are ESL students. The training workshop will have three topics: "Goal Setting, Finding out what your student needs to learn and how you can help"; "Methods and techniques for ESL speaking, pronunciation, reading, and writing"; and "Lesson planning ideas". There is no fee for the training. Please phone 476-4478 to pre-register or for more information. The workshop will be held at the Adult Learning Center in the Library Annex. |
