Air Quality Advisories, Burn Bans issued

Nez Perce Tribe Air quality Program (NPTAQP) issued an Air Quality Advisory and Burn Ban for the reservation that will continue through Monday morning and Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) had issued an advisory and burn ban off the reservation in Clearwater, Idaho, Lewis, Nez Perce and Latah counties that will continue through Tuesday.

The two agencies issued the advisories due to wildfire smoke building up in the area.

NPTAQP said as winds shift throughout the day and night, wildfire smoke will continue to move in and out of areas on the reservation, depending on location and elevation. Some areas will be more impacted than others, so please take appropriate precautions. The air quality is forecasted to be in the 'Moderate' category of the Air Quality Index and may approach the "'Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups' category.

DEQ said the cause of air pollution includes: Sheep Fire seven miles north of Riggins, McGuire Complex five miles west of Dixie, Mustang Complex 0.5 miles north of North Fork and Wesley Fire six miles west of New Meadows. Smoke from several additional fires throughout Idaho, Washington and Oregon will continue to impact the area for the next several days. Visit http://www.inciweb.org/ for more fire information.

Current: The Grangeville and Lewiston areas are forecasted to be in the 'Moderate' category throughout the next several days. Conditions could become elevated to the 'Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups' category. Real-timeair monitoring data can be found at http://airquality.deq.idaho.gov/.

Due to the close proximity to the Sheep Fire (Riggins area) and the Mcguire Complex (Dixie area); the Riggins, White Bird, Dixie and Elk City area are forecasted to be in the 'Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups' to 'Hazardous', depending on fire activity. Air quality is expected to remain elevated in these areas for the next several weeks. Everyone is encouraged to limit exertion and stay indoors when possible. A real time air monitor has been installed in Riggins, monitoring results can be found at http://www.satguard.com/usfs/fleet.aspx, Unit ID: Idaho 1004.

DEQ will be closed Monday, Oct. 8, due to the holiday. They will re-evaluate the situation Tuesday.
