NWS-Missoula issues Winter Weather Advisory for high country

National Weather Service-Missoula has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Northern and Southern Clearwater mountains and the Bitterroot/Sapphire Mountains from 4 a.m. Sunday to 4 p.m. Monday above 3,000 feet.

A westerly flow aloft will deliver another prolonged surge of Pacific moisture into northern Idaho and western Montana Sunday through Monday night. Moderate to heavy snow can be expected over the mountain, including area passes. Initially precipitation will begin as snow in the valleys. However, as temperatures gradually warm in this lower atmosphere, snow will transition over to rain. During this transition, valley could very well see a period of snow, rain and freezing rain.

Mountain passes can expect 6 to 12 inches. Below 3,000 feet 1 to 3 inches is possible.

Locations of impact include: State Highway 11 Pierce to Headquarters, Pierce, Lolo Pass, U.S. Highway 12 Lowell to Lolo Pass, Dixie, Elk City and Highway 93 Sula to Lost Trail Pass.

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means that periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibilities and use caution while driving.
