Winter Weather Advisory issued by NWS-Missoula

National Weather Service-Missoula has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for snow for the Orofino/Grangeville region, Lower Hells Canyon/Salmon River region, Northern and Southern Clearwater and Bitterroot/Sapphire mountains from Thursday afternoon through 10 a.m. Friday.

NWS is forecasting light snow to begin in the region in the late afternoon, becoming moderate at times during the night and through Friday morning. Snow will be accumulating on road surfaces, making for difficult driving conditions.

Snow accumulation of two to five inches is expected in the Orofino/Grangeville region and the Lower Hells Canyon/ Salmon River region. Areas of particular impact include: Greer Grade, Camas Prairie, Grangeville and vicinity, U.S. Highway 95 Slate Creek to Riggins and White Bird Grade.

Four to eight inches of snow is forecast for the mountains. Areas of particular impact include: Elk River, Headquarters, Pierce, State Highway 11 from Pierce to Headquarters, U.S. Highway 12 Lowell to Lolo Pass, Dixie, Elk City, Highway 93 Sula to Lost Trail, Lolo Pass.

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means that periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibilities and use caution while driving.

Orofino

For Thursday night, NWS is forecasting flurries for Orofino between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m., then snow with a low around 15. Total nighttime snow accumulation of one to three inches is possible. Friday, snow is expected before 10 a.m. with new snow accumulation of around an inch possible. A high near 27 degrees is expected. Friday night there is a slight chance of flurries with a low around 14 and light east northeast wind.

Saturday, there is a 40 percent chance of snow, with a high near 32 degrees. New snow accumulation of less than half an inch is possible. Saturday night, snow is likely with a low around 24 degrees. New snow accumulation of less than one inch is possible.

Orofino is at elevation 1,040 feet.

Pierce

Pierce, at elevation 3,241 feet, is expected to have flurries Thursday night, mainly between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m., then snow. The low is forecast around 8 degrees. Total nighttime snow accumulation of one to three inches is possible. Friday, is expected mainly before 10 a.m. with a high of 22 degrees. New snow accumulation of one to two inches is possible. Friday night, there is a chance of flurries with a low around 12 degrees and light northeast wind.

Saturday there is a 50 percent chance of snow with a high near 27 degrees. New snow accumulation of less than half an inch is possible. Saturday night, snow is likely with a low around 17 degrees. New snow accumulation of around an inch is possible.
