NWS-Missoula issues Winter Weather Advisory for upper elevations

National Weather Service-Missoula has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Northern and Southern Clearwater mountains from 4 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday.

Moderate snow will develop early Monday morning creating slick roads and periods of difficult travel, particularly over Lolo Pass.

Six to eight inches is expected over Lolo Pass and in the higher terrain with two to four inches in the valleys down to 3,000 feet. Little or no snow accumulation is expected below 3,000 feet.

Locations of impact include: Elk River, State Highway 11 Pierce to Headquarters, Pierce, U.S. Highway 12 Lowell to Lolo Pass, Dixie and Elk City.

A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow, blowing snow or ice accumulations will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities and use caution while driving.

Pierce

Pierce, at elevation 3,241 feet, is likely to get snow Sunday afternoon, mainly before 4 p.m. The high will be near 38 degrees and the winds will be west southwest around 9 miles per hour. A total daytime snow accumulation of one to two inches is possible. Sunday night, snow is forecast, mainly after 10 p.m. with a low around 29 degrees. South wind from 9-11 mph, with gusts as high a 20 mph is expected. New snow accumulation of less than one inch is possible.

Monday, Washington's Birthday, snow is expected before 10 a.m., then rain and snow with a high near 39 degrees. Winds will be southwest from 11-13 mph, with gusts as high as 21 degrees. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent and new snow accumulation of less than one inch is possible.

Orofino

Orofino, at elevation 1,040 feet, is not in the advisory area and is expected to get scattered rain Sunday afternoon, mainly before 4 p.m. with a high near 43 degrees. Winds will be west southwest around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent. Sunday night, more rain is expected after 4 a.m. with a low around 33 degrees. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent.

Monday, Washington's Birthday, more rain is forecast with a high near 42 degrees. West southwest winds from 9-11 mph and gusts as high as 20 mph are expected. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent.
