NWS-Missoula issues Winter Storm Warning for upper elevations

National Weather Service-Missoula early Saturday morning issued a Winter Storm Warning for snow and blowing snow for the Northern and Southern Clearwater Mountains that will be in effect through 10 a.m. Sunday.

Snow and blowing snow will be present through Sunday morning near Lolo Pass. Low visibility, snow covered roads and wind gusts exceeding 40 miles per hour will create hazardous driving conditions. Near whiteout conditions are expected at times. Snow will reach elevations below 4,000 feet Saturday night.

One to two feet of snow is expected in the higher elevations with three to six inches for populated areas above 2,500 feet, mainly Saturday night through midday Sunday.

Southwest winds from 20 to 30 mph with gusting over 40 mph are forecast. Take precautionary / preparedness actions.

A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow, blowing snow or ice accumulations are expected or occurring. Strong winds are also possible. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible.

Pierce, at elevation 3,241 feet, is expected to get showers Saturday afternoon with a high near 39 degrees. South southwest wind around 21 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph is also forecast. Saturday evening rain showers will continue before 10 p.m., then snow showers with a low around 29 degrees. Chance precipitation is 90 percent with new snow accumulation of one to three inches possible. West southwest wind 18 to 21 mph are forecast with gusts as high as 32 mph.

Sunday there will be snow showers with a high near 34 degrees. New snow accumulations of three to seven inches are possible. Winds will be west southwest 11 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph are expected, according to NWS-Missoula. Sunday night, there will be rain and snow showers with a low around 26 degrees. New snow accumulation of one to three inches is possible. Winds will be southwest around 11 mph, wit gusts as high as 20 mph.
