National Weather issues warning/advisory for areas of Clearwater County

National Weather Service-Missoula has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Orofino/Grangeville region and Lower Hells Canyon/Salmon River region and a Winter Weather Advisory for the Northern Clearwater Mountains from 2 a.m. to 10 p.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST) Saturday.

While snow showers will continue intermittently for most of the day, snow will become steady and intensify greatly early Saturday morning. A prolonged period of moderate to heavy snowfall will create dangerous travel due to low visibilities and snow paced roadways.

Snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches are expected in the mountains and 3 to 6 inches in valleys and over both Greer Grade and White Bird Grade. Snow accumulations in the area of the Northern Clearwater Mountains are expected to be 1 to 4 inches.

Locations of impact for the Winter Storm Warning: include: Greer Grade, Grangeville and vicinity, Camas Prairie, U.S. Highway 95 Slate Creek to Riggins and White Bird Grade. Areas of impact for the Winter Weather Advisory include: Elk River, State Highway 11 from Pierce to Headquarters and Pierce.

A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow, blowing snow or ice accumulations are expected or occurring. Strong winds are also possible. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible. A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means that periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibilities and use caution while driving.
