Debris fire gets out of bounds, burns ½ acre

A debris fire that escaped its bounds burned about ½ acre off Cavendish Highway west of Ahsahka Friday afternoon, according to Clearwater-Potlatch Timber Protective Association (C-PTPA) Chief Fire Warden Len Young.

There were buildings threatened for a time but fire fighters were able to get that down quickly, so there was no damage to the structures. There were no injuries and the fire is in mop-up stage. The fire is under investigation, Young said.

In addition to C-PTPA, Orofino Rural Fire Department, Sunnyside Rural Fire Department, Idaho Department of Lands and Clearwater County Sheriff's Office personnel were on scene. Most of those resources have been released, Young said.

Due to this fire, Orofino Fire Warden Isaac Hull has closed all open burning in Clearwater County for lands C-PTPA protects until further notice.

Rebecca Kerschbaum shared these photos she took while waiting for the road to open up to traffic again. The road was closed during initial attack on the fire.
