Two Weippe residents seriously injured in vehicle accident

Two people from Weippe were seriously injured in a one-vehicle accident Thursday afternoon at 1:20 near mile marker 37 on U.S. Highway 12, two miles east of the Peck junction, according to Idaho State Police.

Claud E. Umphenour, 81, Weippe, was driving a 2001 Toyota Rav4 eastbound on US 12 at mile post 36.9 when he crossed left of the double solid yellow lines. The vehicle continued across the westbound land and went off the left should and struck a pump house, ISP said.

Both Umphenour and his passenger, Maxine G. Umphenour, 78, Weippe, were transported to Clearwater Valley Hospital and then taken by LifeFlight helicopter to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston. Neither of them were wearing a seatbelt, according to ISP.

This vehicle is shown where it stopped after crashing into a pump house near mile post 37 on U.S. Highway 12.

In addition to ISP, Orofino Fire Rescue 3 and Clearwater County Ambulance Service assisted at the scene.
