Remember 2005 Part II
Below are the second six of the top articles of 2005. With the convenience of a web based news source, the links will lead to the original articles and photos. They are not arranged in any particular order of importance or date:
- Wildfire season started earlier than usual in Clearwater Country and was a big concern to fire fighters from various agencies. One of the most spectacular for Orofino was the Eagle's Nest Fire which could be observed across the river from the old Richardson Mill site. We will share photos from it tomorrow. Another that caught people's attention, though it was some distance away was the School Fire. Winds blew smoke and ashes this direction for several days. Harper's Bend Fire reminded many just how little it takes to start a wildfire when it is dry. Here is the link to one article that talks about the various crews that came to help.
- The 116 Engineering Battalion of the National Guard was in Iraq. In addition to news releases from Capt. Monte Hibbert, we received several letters home from Orofino Nation Guard members. One was SSgt. Johnny Powell and the other Andrea Westfall who graduated from OHS in 2004. To see letters from them, click on their names.
- Snake River Water Agreement was a hot topic in the Idaho Legislature that could have lasting impacts on the Clearwater region. It was eventually approved by the House and Senate and signed by Gov. Dirk Kempthorne. However, it may be tied up in court challenges for some time to come. Learn more about the issue.
- Jay Kessinger's termination from State Hospital North caused shock and disbelief both from the community and those who worked at the institution. Even the SHN Advisory Board was stunned. See some of their comments.
- Orofino Lumberjack Days and the Clearwater County Fair brought crowds from all over the region to see exhibits, watch competitions, try carnival rides and renew old aquaintances with OHS class reunions. We compiled a scrapbook of the activities.
- Members of the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery probably would not believe all the attention they received 200 years later. There were demonstrations, displays, re-enactments, canoe trips, passing of the espontoon and too many other activities to list. Don't believe me? Just put "lewis" in the site search engine in the bottom left corner of our home page and see what you get.
Other articles relating to these events may be found by using the site search engine at the bottom left hand corner of the home page. Check Friday's issue of Window on the Clearwater for the top photos of the year.
