Items needed for care packages

Operation Orofino Cares is preparing care packages to be sent to members of the 116th Engineering Battalion of the Idaho National Guard, particularly those from the Orofino Armory, now serving in Iraq.

The boxes will be sent to each of the guard members next Wednesday, according to Sgt. Jim Engle. The packages are being sent about every other month and he says the support of the community has been unbelievable. In conjunction with the Veterans of Foreign Wars, magnetic ribbons continue to be sold to help cover the costs of purchasing phone cards for the soldiers and shipping the boxes. A summer golf tournament is planned to raise additional funds for the project.

Donation of items is needed for the packages including:

  • Campbell Soup at Hand
  • Beef Jerky
  • Slim Jims
  • Turkey, Tuna or Chicken in foil bags
  • Pudding in tubes
  • Cookies
  • Cheese and Crackers
  • Baby wipes
  • Hand sanitizers
  • Disposable cameras

  • Single serve cereal
  • Peanut butter and jelly
  • Gum and candy
  • Thank you cards
  • Visine
  • Medicated foot powder
  • Q-tips
  • Razors
  • Laundry tablets
  • White cotton socks

Besides donating items and funds, there are numerous ways that individuals and groups can help to show support for the troops in Iraq. Among those are writing letters and cards, adopting a soldier and praying.
